A while back, I won an entrepreneurial award. One of the other nominees (a guy) was so certain he was going to get it, he cancelled major plans to attend the presentation.
It’s not mature at ALL – but I look at that award frequently and think “Not bad for a fucking BLOG, haha!”
He lost … hahah!
My hubby was at a BBQ and a guy asked him how my little business was doing. He said “Great! Really wonderful in fact” and the guy said…
“Some people will buy any old shit, won’t they?”
Hubby just smiled and walked away thinking, “Her shitty little business just bought us a house…”
Hey, never mind that your blog might change hundreds, thousands even millions of lives. These men (and honestly, it’s often men) think that we’re just puttering away on the internet scamming people with our crap.
YES – how insulting.
But – here’s the thing – not many people understand the world of online business. They might think that having a coaching/consulting type business is a scam. Your parents might think that your business dreams are risky. Your partner just wants you to stay in your day job.
They don’t understand that your knowledge and expertise is valuable, and the internet has just made it easier for people to find you. Years ago, you might have been the village medicine woman or the local neighbourhood “know it all”. Now you actually get paid for that!
It’s not necessarily their fault. They haven’t seen the possibilities, they don’t have friends like you do who ARE making a legitimate living online. They haven’t seen the success stories that you read daily.
I get it!
Most of my family don’t get it either. After a VIP day with a client, helping her map out her business plan, my little sister asked “Did she just pay to hang out with you all day?”
When I was a life coach, so many friends said “How sad, who would go to a life coach? Losers without friends”
Weird right? Considering most people who seek out a life coach are actively looking to change their life, and usually have a history of investing in themselves. What a weird attitude.
We live in a completely different economy now – one where you can get paid for your skills and knowledge, not just for what you can make with your hands or teach people 1:1.
How my blog makes money
In case you’re curious…
Here are my current income streams:
Selling my books on Amazon – 3% of income
Speaking gigs and running retreats – 1% of income
Selling courses like my Manifesting Course – 11% of income
My Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp – 70% of income
From recommending other people’s amazing courses – otherwise known as affiliate income – 10% of income
Other random promos, one off grants, etc – 14% of income.
Basically, I run a business that gives inspiration, advice and motivation for female business owners. There’s nothing nefarious going on. I package up my knowledge and expertise and sell it to people who want it, using traditional and new media (like social media). Simple (but not without effort!)
You can literally start a blog and turn it into a multiple six figure business within a few years if you create things of value that people need and want. If a million dollar business interests you, you can do that too!
But…… blogs in themselves rarely make money. The days of making a great living from advertising revenue are long gone. Especially for new blogs. And my motto is:
There are easier ways to make money.
Think of your blog as free advertising. It becomes a marketing tool for your products and services and creates your own P.R. Because it allows you to spread your message around the world, to a global audience of people who need your help.
You need to actually have something to sell – like an ebook, course, consulting, coaching, membership site, done for you services, etc. These are all very real, tangible solutions to problems people face every day.
Making money from a blog doesn’t just happen.
I write tons of information every week for free, because I want people to check out my other stuff, books and courses. If they want to take it further, they might sign up for one of my more indepth free courses, like my free manifesting course.
If you’re a graphic designer, you could blog about how to choose the best colors for your blog, how to make your own headers, etc. You might think, “why would I give information away for people to do it themselves?”
Well – that’s part of marketing. Not everyone WILL want to do it themselves, but you’re adding value to their business and one day they might decide to hire you for something they don’t want to, or can’t be bothered doing themselves. But you’ve made yourself into an EXPERT. And expertise is worth paying for.
You might sell recipe books. Well – give away 80% of your recipes for free. Build a loyal customer base and they’ll reward you when you want to sell something.
Here’s the logical progression of a customer…
They find your blog because they Googled something, saw someone share an article of yours on Facebook or clicked on one of your ads.
They read something of value on your blog, maybe implemented a few tips into their business and now see you as an expert.
They get onto your mailing list because of a free optin you created where they had to share their email address in exchange for a free ebook or mini course.
They read your weekly newsletter, become even more reliant and appreciative of your weekly advice, become a fan and share your work regularly on social media
You make an offer that is exactly what they need at the time. They buy your thing. You both go away happy.
Continue to nurture the relationship through amazing free content, until the next time you make a relevant offer.
That’s how you make money from a blog. It’s a proper business that takes a lot of marketing, administration, advertising and nurturing of your customers. You can’t just put up one blog one time and make money. That’s not how it works!
But if you can get into the groove, do the work and make money doing something that you love? Well – that’s the dream isn’t it?
No more boss, no more commute, no compulsory bra wearing 😉
I don’t know how long you’ve been reading my stupid blog but you might think my business has grown overnight. I’ve been told that I make it look easy.
The truth is my business took a lot of work in the early days. I felt like a little hamster, running running running but not getting the results.
Meeting up with old friends and feeling like the biggest fraud when they asked me about my business.
Driving to host workshops with my car’s ceiling hanging around my ears!
PISSED when I read about someone else’s success.
But with consistency, clarity and a bit of courage, my business grew day by day. I learned how to create irresistible free content for my clients (like my free Money Blocks audio), I learned how to put my knowledge into an online course. I learned how to turn my blog into a marketing vehicle for my books, courses and Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp.
Best of all – I surrounded myself with other women who were trying to do the same thing – create a business that supports their family, their dreams and their desire to make a difference in the world.
Entrepreneur – best job in the world.
Seriously – there has never been a better time to be an entrepreneur. With all the technology we have at our fingertips – most of it free or low cost – we can completely buy our freedom from a job.
IF you’re willing to show up, create massive amount of value to your customers and commit yourself to solving a particular problem. (by the way, I have 4 specific tips on how to create your first passive income stream here)
And not to brag, but it’s FUCKING AWESOME not having a “job”. Yes having a successful blog IS work, but it’s different work and it’s a lot more flexible. It makes it so much easier to balance kids and work. You can choose your schedule. You can impact a lot of people and you can influence your own income.
You can get out of bed whenever you want to but chances are you’ll get up earlier like I did because you can’t wait to get started.
You’ll learn more than doing a degree at University, that’s for sure – and it costs less!
Speaking of costs – you can pretty much start a business with nothing – a free website, Paypal and a Skype account. You can start a stupid little blog like mine, and grow it to something that helps thousands of people.
Not everyone is an entrepreneur
And that’s okay. You really have to want it, otherwise it’s so much easier to have a job and get a regular paycheck.
It doesn’t just happen by accident. There is no “build it and they will come” of the blog world. Yes, you need to learn how to start a business, and market yourself.
I am CONSTANTLY studying business. I read business books on holiday. I sometimes sit with my entrepreneurial girlfriends to watch training videos and I love going to conferences.
You too? Let’s face it, we’re business geeks! We’re serial entrepreneurs and we wouldn’t want to do anything else.
We’re also so lucky that we can find mentors who have already done it. Every week, I put out a new video on marketing, money or personal development tips – so make sure you’re on my newsletter list, okay?
Making money online is not a scam. It’s just a different marketing tool. One that opens up your market to the rest of the world. But it’s not like we’re born knowing how business works – so short cut your success and learn to do it properly.
This is your year to take everything to the next level, and I reckon there are awards in YOUR future too.
