Reading “Get Rich, Lucky Bitch!” opened my eyes to how powerful our own mental, spiritual, and emotional blocks can be and how they can hold us back from financial freedom. Suddenly, patterns started to emerge for me in areas beyond money where these blocks were showing up again and again.
Because I specialize in working with deeply creative business owners, I hear from clients every day who are passionate, talented, intelligent…and completely in their own way when it comes to creating business success. I see these wildly valuable women discount their worth and hold themselves back… and I often see myself setting up these same blocks. Here are three of the most common actions I see people taking to block their own success. Are you falling prey to them, too?
Block 1: You Believe The Stories You’ve Created About Yourself
“I’m not creative.” “I’m a flake.” “I’m bad at marketing.” “I don’t like selling.” What are the stories you’ve been telling yourself for years and years? Did you know you don’t have to listen to those? In fact, you can prove them wrong whenever you feel like it!
Block-Busting Action Step: Make a list of all of these stories you have about yourself. Doesn’t matter if you think they’re true or not- get ‘em on paper! You’ll find some ridiculous ones you can cross out right away.
Acknowledge the remaining ones, and notice every time you’re defaulting to them as a reason you can’t move forward with something. Start to question and even defy them!
Block 2: You Undervalue What You’re Great At
It happens more often than I ever thought it would: a client calls in a panic saying she’s not ready for her new website because she’s ”not ready” to grown her business. We jump on Skype to hash it out, and the issue is almost always the same: she’s decided she’s not knowledgeable enough to be considered an “expert” in her field.
After further examination, we almost always come to the conclusion that that isn’t true at all! In fact, she’s usually SO immersed in her area of expertise- she studies it, lives it, dreams about it- that everything starts to feel very obvious and easy to her. And here’s the lesson we can all repeat together:
Just because something comes easily to you, does NOT mean it isn’t valuable to everyone else!
When you are doing the work that comes from your truest, most authentic self, it may seem effortless to you. It may seem like you can’t believe people will pay you to do something you love so much. It may seem like you should be working harder or sweating more. The reality is, you can provide tremendous value to other people and touch their lives with the knowledge you already have RIGHT NOW. And truth is that you can’t affect anyone positively if you keep waiting until you know everything before you even start.
Block-Busting Action Step: Imagine you were going to take a leave of absence from your business and someone was going to take over for you for a bit. Start writing down everything you do and everything you know as if you were preparing someone else to take on your role. You’ll start to see very quickly that you know and do far more than you think you do! Seeing it all together may make you take notice of all of the brilliance inside of you that you take for granted.
Block 3: You Care Too Much About What Other People Think
You’re a people pleaser. You like to say yes. You don’t want anyone to be mad at you or to speak badly of you. And while empathy is a fantastic quality, you may have crossed the line into “living for other people” territory. And frankly, life is too dang short to spend your precious time worrying if your job title is sexy enough, if your prices are too high, if your mailing list is big enough, all for the sake of pleasing every single person in the universe. And all of the pleasing and yes-ing will throw mountain-sized roadblocks into your path to meaningful, on-your-own-terms success.
Block-Busting Action Step: Get clear on your mission. Why are you doing what you do? What amazing ways are you going to help people? Start making decisions from a place of service of that awesome mission. When you’re answering to a bigger purpose, its tough to listen to the little voices from the peanut gallery!
So share in the comments: How have your faced and conquered your blocks? Are there any that have you stuck at the moment? What action will you take to bust them?
