Kate McKibbin, Director & Editor of an incredibly popular fashion site, Drop Dead Gorgeous Daily interviewed me about my start in blogging and my big blogging mistakes. Oh boy – get ready for some ugly stuff.

From my very first blog to today!
But it goes to prove that if you have good information, people will overlook beauty… for a while.
That doesn’t mean you have to stay ugly. But upgrade as your time and budget will allow. You don’t need to have an expensive website straight out the gate. It’s okay to start simple and upgrade as you go.
Ready to see all my ugly DIY sites?
The purple (Oprah) inspired life!
As you can see, I was trying to blog on a LOT of different topics instead of focusing in on just a few. The picture was taken outside my mum’s house on a Nokia phone. I still had the blue but I was using the same purple on Oprah’s website. Yep, just stole her color! (Didn’t mention that when I met her in person!)
My business name was Inspired Life – I wasn’t brave enough to use Lucky Bitch yet, even though I wanted to!
Upgrade – to “classy” colors
You can see that there was an upgrade. I got some pro pictures taken and this time I got a cheap designer to do a banner ad for me. It was a vast improvement.
But look at the colors – very muted. Grey and teal. Very polite and restrained. I wasn’t yet brave enough to claim being the “out there” and fun person I really am. I thought I had to be more “professional” and “classy”. Two things that I’m not!
This time I wanted to mix up the colours a bit. I don’t know WHY I chose green and gold?
Back to muted colors
I ditched the garish yellow and green, and went back to grey. Which is totally one of my favorite colours for clothes and home furnishings, but just doesn’t translate well to websites!
I really liked this picture though, so I wanted to make it the “hero” of the shot. Why? I don’t know, I’m not a designer… clearly!
Denise goes CRAZY colorful!
Maybe as a backlash to all that grey, I decided to go colorful again!
It seems I flip flop between muted and CRAZY. I liked this one but it was too much for my eyeballs so it didn’t last very long.
Toned it down a bit
Instead of doing all the rainbow colours, I muted it down to shades of green instead.
Makeover to the blue bricks!
This was such a great upgrade. I had new photos and I found this amazing wall near my house. I love the bricks so much, but I think the pink is WAY too pink.
I actually got the bricks made into a professional backdrop so it’s the background to all my videos. This one was designed by Jane & Philbert.
Major big renovation
The website you see now, was a MAJOR renovation. It was inspired by beachy brands like Billabong and Ellissa Jayne and I came up with the totally unique tribal print that encompasses my initials, bees, money symbols and more!
So, you see – everyone starts somewhere. The only big blogging mistake you can make is to wait until you are perfect, which never happens and is actually costing you money right now!
So get started!
