What’s the best way to change your direction in business or completely shift what you’re doing even if you’ve be known for it for a very long time?
I am Denise from LuckyBitch.com and let’s talk about it.
So, this is actually a complete coincidence but I’m wearing one of my favorite jumpers today. And I think that’s quite applicable to what we’re talking about because a lot of the time if you are shifting away from doing something in business, hopefully you’re going towards something that you really love.
So let’s talk about the best way to do it and how to communicate it to your audience.
Now I want to share a little bit of a personal tale here. Lucky Bitch is not my first business, it’s not my second business, it’s probably not even my fifth business. In fact I have tried a lot of businesses most of them completely random. Let’s not talk about the ones from, you know, my teens and very early twenties.
One of my very first, I think “serious businesses” was called Raw Brides. It was about helping women who were about to get married lose weight for their wedding using raw food. Kind of an interesting business model but honestly not me, I didn’t really like talking about weddings, I wasn’t a weight-loss expert, I wasn’t a raw food expert, it really wasn’t a good fit. And so after about six months, I started losing steam because I was frankly really bored about talking about those topics.
So, that is really the first sign that you should be shifting away from something.
Are you completely bored by your topic?
Do you feel like you’ve said everything that you can say about it?
Does just the thought of writing another blog post about that topic make you want to vomit?
Well, that’s a good sign that you’re in the wrong business and it’s totally okay to change.
Make The Change
So my tip on this, is just make the change. Don’t feel like because you’ve built something, you have to be stuck with it. Remember the advice that we’ve gotten as kids, you know, you’ve made your bed, now you have to lie in it. In business, not so much, it’s totally up to you to change your business whenever you like.
You can totally do it especially because if you love something you’ll not get bored by it. You’ll be able to talk about it all damn day long. And so for me, talking about money, I can talk about it all the time. I know it’s really the business that I’m supposed to be in.
So when I wanted to quit Raw Brides and start talking about personal development and money, the first thing I did, I emailed my newsletter list and said, “Hey guys, this is my new site, this is what I’ll be talking about from now on.” I didn’t apologize and I gave them the option to unsubscribe straightaway and just said this is what I will be talking about from now on.
There was no transition period where I started to kind of bring it in, maybe try to transition them slowly which you can totally do. I just, no apologies, just said this is where I’m going from now on and gave people the option just to stop following me or they could come along as well.
Having trouble making a decision on what to do? I’ve got some tips for you over here: 3 Ways to Make Quick Decisions When You’re Feeling Indecisive.
It’s A Positive Thing
The other thing is, you know, it’s a positive thing and you have to frame it that way. So, maybe you’ve got clients that you have to let down, maybe you’ve got contracts that you need to break, either way I would frame that as a positive thing.
So by all means, continue on with the client if you’ve got to set amount of sessions or you’ve got something that you need to deliver but tell them their deadline and tell them after this, I will not be offering this anymore but here is what I will be offering and it is a positive thing.
Yes, you might lose some clients. Yes you might lose some money in the short term. Just remember when you do something that you love, you will actually make more money which brings me to my third point.
Do What You Love
A couple of years ago, I read a book called Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow. And I remember thinking, when, when is this money going to come but trust me, it really does, it really does start to flow to you when you do something that you love and you do it well and you do it consistently, you show up, you do the work because, you know, you might be really good at something but that missing piece, if you don’t love it, you’re never really going to make the money and you’re really not going to love the business that you’re in enough to make it an ongoing concern.

Think Long Term
So, the last thing I want to leave you with is think of someone like Louise Hay. She, at the point of making this video, she’s had such an amazing long career working well into her 80s. She has done something that she’s loved for such a long time, she has built an incredible business, she has touched lives of so many people.
You really don’t have to do everything in one year.
You’ve got to think of your life and your career as a long term thing and you really don’t want to be doing something that you don’t like for the rest of your life, do you.
Remember, time is going to go by anyway so you may as well start today.
Love to hear from you in the comments.
